Back from the GHGT 12 Conference (Austin, TX, USA, 5-9 Oct., 2014)

Christophe Kervévan presenting paper#1

The GHGT 12 conference took place in Austin (TX) from October 5th to 9th. Four partners of the CO2-DISSOLVED project, represented by 7 persons, were present there for the whole week (BRGM, BGR, GeoRessources, Partnering in Innovation). Two oral presentations were given by C. Kervévan (BRGM) and S. Knopf (BGR) in session 9D (Wednesday 8th, 4:00-5:00pm). Two posters were presented by C. Kervévan and A. Randi (GeoRessources). G. Blount (Partnering in Innovation) also presented a poster on the Pi-CO2 system with a remarkable success in terms of visitors (during the whole poster session, at least two or three persons were always present around the poster, asking many questions about this intriguing CO2 capture facility). With more than 1,100 attendees, it can be said that this conference was successful and we all had opportunities to meet several persons that were interested by the CO2-DISSOLVED concept and the work presented. Also interesting for us was the possibility to meet some scientists working on the Icelandic CarbFix project which also considers storing CO2 as being previously dissolved in the injected water.

This week was thus very positive for the project as it gave us the opportunity to largely communicate on it. In parallel, we held several informal meetings between the team members (during the conference, the dinners we had together, or even at the airport waiting for our planes!). The statistics of the project website (the one you are visiting now) showed a peak on the tuesday following the conference, with a majority of american visitors. This peak of visits can undoubtedly be related to our presentations at the conference. The full papers of our oral and poster presentations can be read (but not downloaded)  from the conference website:

- "CO2-DISSOLVED: a novel concept coupling geological storage of dissolved CO2 and geothermal heat recovery – Part 1: Assessment of the integration of an innovative low-cost, water-based CO2 capture technology" by C. Kervévan (BRGM), M.-H. Beddelem (CFG Services), K. O’Neil (Partnering in Innovation, Inc.).

- "CO2-DISSOLVED: a novel concept coupling geological storage of dissolved CO2 and geothermal heat recovery – Part 2: Assessment of the potential industrial applicability in France, Germany, and the U.S.A.", by C. Castillo (BRGM), S. Knopf (BGR), C. Kervévan (BRGM), F. May (BGR).

- "CO2-DISSOLVED: a novel concept coupling geological storage of dissolved CO2 and geothermal heat recovery – Part 3: Design of the MIRAGES-2 experimental device dedicated to the study of the geochemical water-rock interactions triggered by CO2 laden brine injection", by A. Randi (GeoRessources), J. Sterpenich (GeoRessources), C. Morlot (GeoRessources), J. Pironon (GeoRessources), C. Kervévan (BRGM), M.-H. Beddelem (CFG Services), C. Fléhoc (BRGM).

- "CO2-DISSOLVED: a novel concept coupling geological storage of dissolved CO2 and geothermal heat recovery – Part 4: Preliminary thermo-hydrodynamic simulations to assess the CO2 storage efficiency", by V. Hamm (BRGM), C. Kervévan (BRGM), D. Thiéry (BRGM).
